It is an honor to have Plastics and Coral Bleaching accepted for the upcoming “79th Ohio Annual Exhibition” at the Zanesville Museum of Art. It has been one of my long-term goals to have work accepted into this highly acclaimed annual show. I am particularly thrilled that the work selected is of part of my latest ongoing series.
Plastics and Coral Bleaching is a 3-dimensional wall sculpture made mainly from paper, string, encaustic medium, and discarded plastic items. Facts and statistics about plastic pollution and current coral bleaching episodes are added to the sides and top edges of the cradle board.
The corals included in this work are:
- sea fan coral
- pulse coral
- bubble coral
- staghorn coral
- pillar coral
- leaf coral
- vase coral
- sea whip coral
- sun coral
Additional there are sea anemones and sponges. Much of the bold color comes from plastics incorporated among the corals which are each in a different phase of bleaching.
There are 11 pieces of plastic including:
- various colors and sizes of plastic bags
- gift wrap
- button
- plastic wrap
- bubble wrap
- electric cord
